As part of a month-long book drive for Mayor Sly James’ Turn the Page KC, the community is asked to do some spring cleaning and donate children’s books, April 1 – 25, 2014. Throughout the month of April, the public is encouraged to donate age-appropriate new or gently used books to the four Kansas City, MO school districts currently partnering with Turn the Page KC: Park Hill, Kansas City Public Schools, Hickman Mills and Center.
The mission of Turn the Page KC in Kansas City Power and Light District is to mobilize the community to achieve reading proficiency at grade level or above for all third graders in Kansas City, MO.
Book Drop Donation Locations
There will be donation boxes set up near the Kansas City Power and Light District:
- Cosentino’s Market Downtown
- The Garment District Boutique
- Kansas City’s Live! Block (near the public safety office and restrooms)
- Lattéland
These books will be donated to Park Hill, Kansas City Public Schools, Hickman Mills and Center school districts to fill students’ backpacks on the final day of classes before summer break.

Mayor James Book Presentation
To culminate the collection of books, Mayor Sly James will surround himself with all of the donations for a presentation on the KC Live! Stage at the Power & Light District on April 25, 2014 at 4:30 pm, followed by a Happy Hour to celebrate.
Summer Reading Volunteers
Turn the Page KC is working with the Upper Room, a non-profit organization that provides high-quality out-of-school education programs for low income families in Kansas City. Volunteers are needed for the Summer Reading Program to commit one hour per week reading with a student in K-3 at their school.
