Farmstead summer camps explore science and nature

From rocks and bugs to ecosystems and animals, the Deanna Rose Farmstead’s Summer Fun camps will help children explore science and nature this summer.

Camp themes include Rocks Rock, Bug Mania, Our Exciting Earth and Living Wonders. The camps are ideal for children ages 6 – 12. Summer Fun with Mad Science includes day camps held 9 a. m. – 4 p.m., on Mondays in July. Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead is located at 13800 Switzer Road, Overland Park, KS.

Mad Science camps include:

July 6 – Rocks Rock

Rocks Rock day camp will be a day for discovering the Earth. Activities include Earthworks, Mineral Mania, the Rock Walk, Panning for Gems, Magnetic Magic and an activity on soil erosion.

July 13 – Bug Mania!

Campers will invade the realm of insects with activities that explore bugs’ fabulous flying abilities, unique eyesight, and the way that they defend themselves against predators. Campers will see how camouflage works and investigate how bugs can be helpful to our environment. Bug models will be built to take home.

July 20 – Our Exciting Earth

Our Exciting Earth will connect the interactions that exist between the living creatures in ecosystems, including human beings. Campers will team up to create their own ecosystems by exploring the farmstead and using microscopes to investigate plants, animals and insects. Additional activities include creating tie-dye designs using nature’s colors, and playing the role of the naturalist to use skills for tracking animals in the wild.

July 27 – Living Wonders

Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead is filled with animals native to Kansas. Campers will learn about these animals, their camouflage methods, habitats, life cycles and adaptations. Activities include exploring birds and beasts to decipher animal tracks and more.
