Enjoy Celebrating 85 Years of Roses this weekend with the author of The Sustainable Rose Garden, a rose contest and ballet performance.
The Kansas City Rose Society (KCRS) will celebrate its 85th anniversary with a weekend of events. The celebration begins at 7 p.m., Friday, June 3 at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Auditorium, 4525 Oak St, Kansas City, MO, with the presentation, A Vision of Roses: Sustainable Rose Gardening by Pat Shanley, president of the American Rose Society. Shanley grows about 250 roses in Glen Cove, NY. She will sign copies of her book The Sustainable Rose Garden – A Reader in Rose Culture” after the presentation. The event is sponsored by the Kansas City Rose Society, Westport Garden Club and Powell Gardens.
On Saturday, June 4, all rose growers are invited to bring roses to a show and contest in Loose Park between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The contest is open to all, and there is no entry fee. There will be a youth class for exhibitors 17 years old and younger and a novice class for any exhibitor who has never won a blue ribbon in a rose show. The public will be asked to vote on the most fragrant rose. The show will be open for viewing to exhibitors and KCRS members from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 4 and open to the public 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 5.
June 5 is officially Rose Day in Kansas City, and the celebration will include performances by the Kansas City Youth Ballet at 3 p.m. and the Kansas City Saint Andrew Pipes and Drums at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., in the Laura Conyers Smith Municipal Rose Garden at Loose Park, 5200 Pennsylvania, Kansas City, MO.
