Take mom on a Mother’s Day adventure

This weekend, take mom to a Powell Gardens’ event, a Mother’s Day for Mother Earth puppet show or a SeedSavers plant exchange for an outdoors’ adventure.

Powell Gardens has a Mother’s Day weekend of events that include the annual Plant Sale, Iris Weekend, Bonsai Society Spring Exhibit and Mother’s Day Performance and Brunch.

The plant sale opens 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, May 6 for a members-only reception. The public sale is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 7 and 8. Gardening with Purpose is the theme of this year’s sale, which features edibles, perennials and annuals for sun and shade, plants that attract pollinators, varieties that tolerate heat and drought, and others that resist diseases and pests. Iris Weekend includes hundreds of award-winning irises, which is the official flower of Kansas City, MO. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, May 7-8. Check Powell Gardens’ Iris Hill or call 816-697-2600 for blooming updates.

Learn about the living art of bonsai during the Bonsai Society of Greater Kansas City’s spring exhibit, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., May 6 – 8. Society members will showcase a variety of trees and be available to answer questions. At 1:30 p.m. each day, bonsai expert Kathy Schlesinger will give a presentation on caring for bonsai trees. Garden admission applies. 

On May 8, Powell Gardens will celebrate Mother’s Day with a reservation-only brunch in Café Thyme from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a live performance by Victor & Penny in the open-air Missouri Barn from 1-3 p.m. The concert is included with garden admission. Prepaid reservations are required for brunch.   • Non-members: $30/adults and $14/children 5-12 (free for kids 4 and younger) 
  • Members: $25/adults and $12/children 5-12 (free for kids 4 and younger) 

Guests can take picnics to the Missouri Barn terrace during the performance by Victor & Penny. Garden admission applies.

SeedSavers-KC Plant Exchange

Saturday, May 7

Pack up your extra plants, seed and bulbs and take them to the annual SeedSavers-KC Plant Exchange from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 7 at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center.

Gardeners will be given credit for the number of plants they submit and will be allowed to select the same number from plants, bulbs and seeds submitted by other gardeners. This free exchange is also open to new gardeners who will be able to take home up to five plants. The organizers request that submissions not include invasive species or aggressive growers.

Mother’s Day for Mother Earth

Sunday, May 8

Pack a picnic and take mom and the kids to the Mother’s Day for Mother Earth giant puppet show on Sunday, May 8 on the south lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

StoneLion Puppet Theater’s 10th Anniversary Mother’s Day show is all about water. The Mermaid’s Tail (Tale) follows the journey of a giant plastic water bottle down a storm drain and eventually out to sea. More than 100 community volunteers from ages 2 to 75 will perform alongside StoneLion’s professional troupe. 

Activities are planned for noon to 4 p.m., and the play begins at 2 p.m. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is located at 4525 Oak St., Kansas City, MO. The event is free.
