Thousands of items discarded by KU students will be on sale this weekend in a massive recycling effort to support Lawrence Creates Makerspace.
At the end of each academic year when students move out of University of Kansas dormitories, Lawrence Creates Makerspace works with KU to collect discarded items of all kinds. Volunteers then spend the summer sorting, cleaning and preparing them for reuse in the community through a huge sale that supports the activities of Lawrence Creates Makerspace, a non-profit project of the Lawrence Sustainability Action Network.
More than 5,000 pounds of items will be for sale, including women’s and men’s clothing, shoes, electronics, small appliances, household goods, kitchen wares, books and some furniture. All clothing will be sold for $1 each, including items that still have their original price tags attached.
“This event is a win-win for several organizations,” said Eric Kirkendall, director of the Lawrence Creates Makerspace. ”We keep thousands of pounds of goods out of the dumpster; KU gets help in cleaning up at the end of the year; and shoppers will get great bargains.”
The sale will be held 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, August 20 and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday, August 21 at 1041 New Hampshire St., Lawrence, KS.
Lawrence Creates Makerspace was founded in 2013 to help community residents learn new skills, develop products and businesses and create art.
