Are weeds taking over? Get MU’s app

If weeds are thriving in your garden and you want to know how to get rid of them, get the free MU ID Weed App and start identifying hundreds of invasive species.

“Proper identification of weeds is important so that you choose an appropriate and cost-effective method of control,” said Kevin Bradley, University of Missouri Extension weed scientist. Bradley developed the app with James Meng, a programmer for MU Extension Technology and Computer Services.

A recent update helps users identify weeds in the lawn, garden and field with new graphics for more than 430 weed species in Missouri and surrounding states.

ID Weeds lets users narrow the list of potential weed species using a series of illustrations and drop-down boxes for various plant characteristics. The user chooses characteristics to identify the weed. Detailed information and one or more photographs help the user narrow the choices. Weeds can also be searched by common or scientific name or from an alphabetical list of all weeds contained in the app.

The app is available for iPhones, iPads and Android devices by searching the app stores for idweeds. There is also a web version on the MU website.
