Visit a prairie during Discovery Day

Explore the Snyder Prairie at the Grassland Heritage Foundation’s Prairie Discovery Day and enjoy guided walks, lunch, a painting workshop and other activities on Saturday, September 17.

The day begins with a Plein Air Painting Workshop with artist Louis Copt. The focus will be on image selection, composition and color mixing using oil and watercolor. The workshop is from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is open to all levels of students and costs $40. Reservation can be made at the Grassland Heritage Foundation.

At 9:30 a.m., volunteers will work with land manager, Frank Norman, to cut brush, remove fence posts and do other prairie restoration activities. To volunteer, email [email protected].

The picnic begins at 11:45 a.m. with a free lunch. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, water bottle, reusable plates and utensils. Guided walks begin at 12:15 pm. and 1:30 p.m.

Additional activities include live animal displays from the Topeka Zoo, presentations on butterflies and pollinators, and the prairie watershed with the Prairie Band Potawatomie Nation.
