Give kids the gift of gardening

If you’re looking for a holiday gift that will get the kids outside this spring, check out Beanstalk Seeds at Kansas City Community Gardens (KCCG).

This new online seed store offers a large seed collection designed to introduce children to the joys of growing fruits and vegetables. For the holidays, Beanstalk Seeds also has gift baskets for different age ranges that include simple gardening tools, seeds and other gardening items.

All seeds come from plants that were kid-tested in the KCCG Beanstalk Children’s Garden and more than 200 schoolyards across the city. Each seed packet offers a variety of unique characteristics and fun names such as “Rainbow Blend” carrots, “Easter Egg” radishes and “Dragon Tongue” beans. Garden kits include “Plant a Rainbow” for a vividly colored garden and “Snackable Garden” with edibles to pick, rinse and eat without preparation.

The entire catalog is available online at BeanStalk SeedsThe website also includes a number of resources for individual and group gardens, plus plant descriptions, growing instructions and photos.

“Instead of going to 20 websites to find fun and unique seeds that might draw your children into the garden, you can go to Beanstalk Seeds and find them all in one place,” said Andrea Mathew, Beanstalk Seeds program director. “All the seeds in our collection have been grown in kid’s gardens with great success.”

Kansas City Community Gardens is a nonprofit organization assisting low-income households and community groups in the Kansas City metropolitan area with growing their own vegetables and fruit from garden plots located in backyards, vacant lots and community sites. All proceeds from Beanstalk Seeds go toward helping families, urban schools and community groups.
