Get garden inspiration at these upcoming tours

Over the next two weekends, enjoy four garden tours that include the lush surroundings of a Frank Lloyd Wright house, the historic Thomas Hart Benton home and gardens featuring native plants, butterfly gardens and unique designs of these historic homes and suburban estates.

Historic Roanoke Neighborhood Garden Tour

Saturday, June 10, Noon – 5 p.m.

Friends of Roanoke Park will host the Roanoke Neighborhood Spring Home & Garden Tour featuring the six historic homes and gardens. The tour includes the Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio, a Frank Lloyd Wright designed home and a 1906 home designed by architect Fredrick Gunn that includes massive stone walls and a natural setting on a bluff overlooking Roanoke Park.

Tickets are $25 for general admission and includes light refreshments. They can be purchased in advance or at a ticket booth on tour day at Valentine Road and 38th Street. The tour is limited to children 10 years and older and adults. Limited tickets are available for a garden-style party from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Thomas Hart Benton Home followed by a party from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Frank Lloyd Wright home. Shawnee Garden Sampler Tour

Saturday, June 10

9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Garden Club of Shawnee will present the Garden Sampler Tour featuring six unique garden designs showcasing both shade and sun perennials with colorful annual. The gardens include native plants, butterfly gardens, vegetable and herb gardens, water features and a miniature railroad that winds through a garden.

Tour proceeds will provide funds to the gardening projects of Shawnee schools, churches, museums and non-profit organizations and to the Shanna Morrison Memorial Rose Garden in West Flanders Park.

Tickets are $10 and are available at Family Tree Nursery in Overland Park & Shawnee, Hartman Hardware in Shawnee and Wild Birds Unlimited in Shawnee. Online tickets are available through Eventbrite

Lawrence Food Garden Tour

Saturday, June 10, 9 a.m. – Noon; Rain date, Sunday, June 11

The Lawrence, KS Food Garden Tour will feature home, community and school gardens with vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, berries, chickens and other small animals, honey bees, raised beds, permaculture and water harvesting. Gardeners will be on site during the tour to answer questions and share garden knowledge and inspiration. 

Farms include the KU Student Farm, 1865 E. 1600 Road; the Garden Incubator, 200 N. 7th St.; and Sunrise Community Garden, 1501 Learnard Ave. This is a free, self-guided tour using a brochure and map that can be downloaded at Sunrise Projects

Douglas County Extension Master Gardeners’ Garden Tour

Saturday, June 3, 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Sunday, June 4, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Douglas County Master Gardeners’ Garden Tour & Plant Sale will feature local gardens and offer locally grown plants with many native varieties. Five out of the seven gardens on the tour belong to Master Gardeners. Most of the gardens contain a water feature, ranging from a dry-creek bed that only fills up when heavy rains occur, to bubblers, ponds, a creek and a view overlooking a lake.

Tour tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the plant sale on Saturday morning, in advance at the Extension Office, or online at Douglas County Master Gardeners’ Garden Tour

The tour begins at the Extension Office at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Extension Office, 2110 Harper, Lawrence, KS. The native plant sale is on Saturday only from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Plants are $4 each or three for $10.
