Create holiday gifts from nature

‘Tis the season to decorate for the holidays, and there are many opportunities to learn how to create festive decor from nature.

To learn how to use red cedar, prairie grasses, wild nuts, berries and seeds to create wreaths, swags, cards and even a kissing ball, check out these workshops.

Holiday Nature Crafts

Saturday, December 2, 9 a.m. –  Noon

Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center, 1401 NW Park Road, Blue Springs, MO
This free, family, walk-in class is open anytime between 9 a.m. to noon. Craft tables will be set up with all the items needed to create a nature craft for the holiday season.

 Holiday Greenings

Saturday, December 16, 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center, 4750 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, MO

Thinking of making the holidays a little greener this season? Learn to decorate using all native plants and trees at this free, all-ages, walk-in class. Fashion a festive holiday swag using red cedar, prairie grasses, wild nuts, berries and seeds.

Wonderland Workshop: Drop-in Gift Making for Families

Saturday, December 2, 3 – 6 p.m.

Powell Gardens, 1609 N.W. U.S. Highway 50, Kingsville, MO

Powell Gardens will host a Drop-in Gift Making workshop designed for families who want to make ornaments, holiday cards and bird feeders. Children can visit with Santa and families can get a holiday photo taken. Festival of Lights admission applies and includes most hands-on activities. There is an additional fee for photographs and $2 fee per person for the ornament activity.

 Natural Holiday Décor Workshop

Saturday, December 9, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Powell Gardens, 1609 N.W. U.S. Highway 50, Kingsville, MO

At this natural decor workshop, participants will create a decoration for a door, a table and a gift to give or keep. They will receive instruction on the process of selecting, preparing and using plant materials to create unique door charms, garlands and a romantic kissing ball that will thrive in the seasons. The class includes a box lunch and adult beverage. There is a $110 fee (members receive 10% off).
