See how you can join a Community Solar Farm

Customers of the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) can learn how to participate in a new BPU Community Solar Farm Program at two free seminars on Monday, March 19.

The seminar will be held at West Wyandotte Public Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, KS for residents who own or rent a home or apartment. Two sessions will be held from 4 – 5:30 p.m. and from 6 – 7:30 p.m.

Loren Williamson, BPU senior vice president of project development, and Lindsay Case, solar developer from MC Power Companies, will address how community solar works, basic costs, utility bill credits, and how residents can access solar energy and avoid installation and maintenance.

Participants will learn:

  • How solar panels supply electricity to the average household
  • Comparison of community solar benefits to rooftop solar systems
  • What participants can expect when they sign up

The BPU recently built a 1,000 KW community solar farm of more than 3,700 solar panels next to BPU’s Nearman Power Plant. It is the first municipal utility to offer a community solar program in Kansas. The BPU currently sources 45 percent of its power from renewable energy from wind power,  hydropower and landfill gas.

To reserve seating for the 4 p.m. or 6 p.m. session, contact David Allen at 913-573-9922 or [email protected].

Solar energy is way behind in the UK. Partially because we don’t have much sunlight I think, but it is still not the norm. Which I feel it should be.

I sure wish St. Louis area had one of these! Missouri is going backwards.
