Students turn training into jobs

Nine students started paid internships in Kansas City this June after completing Environmental Connection Opportunities for Students (ECOS), a local program for local high-school youth.

The interns will practice job skills in a real-world employment setting at the Environmental Protection Agency, Habitat Restore, Vireo Landscape Architecture, the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center, and Stone Lion Puppet Theatre.

“The summer internship is setting me up for future success as an engineer,” said Trashaun Maull, a student who is an intern at the EPA and participated in the ECOS program.

ECOS is a year-long after school program that includes classroom instruction , hands-on projects, guest speakers, science journals, field trips and service learning opportunities.

Green Works in Kansas City, a non-profit organization, started ECOS in 2007 and has helped more than 75 students from Kansas City’s urban core build their green job readiness.
