The Mid-America Regional Council is working with area cities to create a vision for redeveloping parts of U.S. Highway 40 in Kansas City, Mo., Independence, Lee’s Summit, Lake Tapawingo and Blue Springs. The project partners will hold an open house to engage residents in a discussion about conceptual design alternatives for future development.

This planning effort is part of MARC’s Creating Sustainable Places initiative, which is focused on sustainable development plans and projects for six transportation corridors in the metro area. (See details at www.marc.org/sustainableplaces/corridors.htm)The initiative is funded by a $4.25 million Sustainable Communities planning grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The U.S. 40 corridor project area includes 31 st Street from Troost Ave. in Kansas City east to Interstate 70, and U.S. 40 from I-70 to Adams Dairy Parkway in Blue Springs. The U.S. 40 Highway Corridor planning team is working with elected officials, city staffs, neighborhood groups, local churches, business and property owners, and the general public to propose ideas and plans for the corridor. Ultimately, the project will yield recommendations for transportation, land-use and aesthetic and open-space improvements.

In addition to the open house, residents may also share their opinions using MARC’s virtual town hall website, www.creatingsustainableplaces.com.
