Christmas Bird Count totals Kansas City’s birds

The 113th annual Christmas Bird Count took place in Kansas City, MO on December 30, 2012. In a 15-square mile circle that included areas such as Swope Park, Fleming Park and Longview Lake, nine groups of bird-watchers from the Burroughs Audubon Society found 86 species of birds.

Two of the more unusual birds present were an Eared Grebe and a Red Crossbill found at Lake Jacomo. Some of the most commonly found birds included American Robins, Canada Geese and Red-winged Blackbirds, which formed flocks numbering in the thousands.
