Make biodegradable seed-starting cups from repurposed recyclables

It may not feel like it, but spring is definitely on its way. And if you are starting seeds this season, that means it’s time to collect supplies and get planting. You can go to any garden center and pick up a variety of adequate seed-starting kits and trays, or you can make your own out of cardboard tubes and egg cartons from your recycling bin for free.

Cut each compartment free of an egg carton, or cut a cardboard tube into 1 1/2-inch sections, add some potting soil, and you’ve got instant seeding cups! And because both materials are biodegradable, you can transplant the whole thing in the ground or into a larger pot without disturbing the roots.

So don’t let this weather get you down. Instead, sift through your trash or recycling bin, make some of these simple seed-starting cups, and plant some of your favorite herbs. The little green seedlings will cheer you up in no time.
