HUEE school grants promote energy efficiency

“This project mirrored those efforts and allowed them to use writing, film production, editing and even some drama to remind others of the importance of energy conservation,” she said.

Oakhill’s PSA focused on energy conservation, one of multiple subjects outlined in the contest guidelines. Other subject areas include:

  • Current energy usage and how to conserve more
  • Energy wasting habits and how to correct them
  • Renewable energy resources

Not only do students learn more about energy efficiency through production of the PSAs, but they also learn valuable skills, Steele said.

“They are learning how to use video equipment, collaborate with other kids and research different forms of energy and how to use it more efficiently around their home and school,” she said.

HUEE also provides sponsorships of energy related events in the community and grants to organizations promoting energy efficiency education, Steele said.

This school year’s contest will begin in September. Students will have the whole school year to work on their PSAs instead of just second semester like in previous years.

Rules, instructions and deadlines for the contest can be found on HUEE’s website under the “Grants” section.
