Celebrate the season by crafting a natural wreath, ornaments and decor from evergreens, pinecones and other natural materials at upcoming events in the Kansas City area.

Holiday Nature Crafts featuring Smokey Bear

The Burr Oak Woods Nature Center will collect materials from nature to give inspiration for DIY nature crafts. The event will also feature holiday photo opportunities with Smokey Bear.

This free event will be held 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 5 at Burr Oak Woods Nature Center, 1401 NW Park Rd., Blue Springs, MO. One free photo will be given with Smokey Bear. No registration is required. For more information, visit www.mdc.mo.gov.

Natural Wreaths Class

Craft a natural artisan wreath at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center. The nature center is hosting a class that will use evergreens, pinecones and many other natural trimmings to make wreaths. Attendees should bring a small wire or grape vine wreath as a base for the wreath.

This free event will be held 2:30 – 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 5 at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center, 1401 NW Park Rd., Blue Springs, MO. Registration begins November 1st. Call 816-228-3766 to sign up. For more information, visit www.mdc.mo.gov.

Home for the Holidays at Powell Gardens

Powell Gardens is hosting Home for the Holidays, a festive day designed to get you and your home in the holiday spirit. Staff and volunteers will be sharing ideas for nature-inspired decorating and gift giving. The event is also an opportunity to purchase a variety of holiday poinsettias, handcrafted wreaths, ornaments and stocking stuffers.

This event will be held 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 5 at Powell Gardens, 1609 NW US Hwy 50, Kingsville, MO. It is free with garden admission. For more information, visit www.powellgardens.org.

Holiday Swag Workshop

Nature provides many materials that can be used to make colorful ornaments for trees and homes. Explore and experiment with the many material options available right outside the door at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center. At the workshop, learn how to make a swag using prairie grasses, wild nuts, berries and seeds.

I do not know how to incorporate cones and pines for outdoor decor, but the idea of using them for beautifying the landscape is interesting. Thank you for sharing these ideas.
