Tour a Mission Cliffs passive-energy house

A top-rated, energy-efficient passive house still under construction will be open for a free tour at a Heartland Renewable Energy Society (HRES) event that is open to the public at 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 29 in Kansas City, KS.

The house was designed and is being built by Prairie Design Build. It is located at 3834 S. Thompson Circle in the Mission Cliffs development west of the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS.

Billed as the first passive house with Google Fiber, the structure is built to consume 86 percent less energy for heating and 46 percent less energy for cooling compared to comparable houses. The house is rated PHIUS+ 2015 by the Passive Building Standard of North America, which is the first and only passive building standard based on climate-specific comfort and performance criteria. It is designed to be as energy efficient, durable, resilient and cost effective as possible for its specific location.

Some of the energy-efficiency features include:

  • Roof R-80
  • Air Leakage <0.6ACH
  • Wall R-42
  • Windows R-7
  • Foundation R-18
  • Slab R-18

For more information, go to the website of Prairie Design Build. HRES organizers request an RSVP at [email protected].

Julie,
I have come to rely on Greenability event postings for much of my weekly social activity. If not for this outstanding on-line publication I might be forced to stay home and paint the house, or some other mundane activity. Thanks, and please keep up the good work.
