A new Bike Share for All pilot program is being launched in Kansas City to give inexpensive access to bike sharing for low-income residents who live in underserved areas.
Bike Share for All: Creating Equity for Cycling in Kansas City will offer bike sharing for those who need transportation to employment, school and other community services. It is being coordinated by Kansas City BCycle and BikeWalkKC.
Under this program, individuals who rely on needs-based services will be able to sign up for an annual membership of just $10. Users can sign up using any of the current methods of payment, as well as pre-paid credit or debit cards, which will allow access for those do not have a bank account. BikeWalkKC is also partnering with KCATA to investigate the feasibility of a combined bike share/bus pass solution.
The program is a pilot program in partnership with four community agencies: Hope Faith Ministries, MainCor, Metropolitan Lutheran Ministry and Westside House Organization. The project is being funded ty the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City and the H&R Block Foundation in partnership with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA). If the pilot is successful, BikeWalkKC plans to expand the program with other partner organizations.
