More than 5,000 items discarded by KU students will be on sale in a massive recycling effort at the KU Reuse Treasure Sale.
At the end of each academic year when students move out of University of Kansas dormitories, Lawrence Creates Makerspace works with KU to collect discarded items of all kinds. Volunteers then spend the summer sorting, cleaning and preparing them for reuse in the community through a huge sale that supports the activities of Lawrence Creates Makerspace, a non-profit project of the Lawrence Sustainability Action Network.
The KU Reuse Treasure Sale will be held from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 18 and 8 a.m. – noon Sunday, August 19 at 1041 New Hampshire St., Lawrence, KS.
The sale items include women’s and men’s clothing, shoes, electronics, small appliances, dorm refrigerators, couches, rugs, futons, kitchen wares, books, sheets, pillows, lamps and other household goods. Everything will be sold for $1 each.
“This event is a win-win for several organizations,” said Eric Kirkendall, director of the Lawrence Creates Makerspace. ”We keep thousands of pounds of goods out of the dumpster; KU gets help in cleaning up at the end of the year; and shoppers will get great bargains.”
Lawrence Creates Makerspace was founded in 2013 to help community residents learn new skills, develop products and businesses and create art.
