Tour passive solar, net-zero home & farm – New date: 10/14

Visit Urbavore Farm and tour the passive solar, net-zero home and farmstead built by two urban, organic farmer homesteaders who live a diverse, sustainable lifestyle with their two young boys on 13.5 acres in Kansas City, MO.

Farmers Brooke Salvaggio and Dan Heryer invite the public to see what a truly sustainable lifestyle looks like at their Hogs at Sunset party from 3 – 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14 at their farm, 5500 Bennington Ave., Kansas City, MO. A potluck dinner begins at 5:30 p.m.

The two have spent the last several years building an earth-contact, passive solar house that has a “green” roof, solar panels, water recycling system and composting toilet. The house was built with materials sourced from recycled or sustainable sources, including 100-year-old barn siding, recycled lumber, ReWall recycled wallboard, 200-year-old bricks and plant-based paints.

The farm has a 200-tree orchard of apples pear, peach, plum and cherry trees, plus blackberries, strawberries, asparagus and more. Their newest addition is hogs – about 3,000 pounds of them.

“We’ve been painstakingly building it day in and day out for the past eight years,” Salvaggio said. “It produces our food, our energy, our water, our income, and it houses our family. It’s everything. But, it’s painfully raw & honest — a living, breathing manifestation of our sweat and blood turned into food, energy, and a self-sustaining livelihood.”

Visitors will be able to walk the fields and orchards, visit the hogs and chickens, tour the house and enjoy local musicians and yard games. Salvaggio promises the party will have “craft beer, nude pigs, insane farmers and green chaos in so many forms.” At this kid-friendly event, visitors are invited to bring a potluck dish to share and their own plates and utensils. This will be zero-landfill event, with composting available.
