Get set to garden with virtual workshops

Deep Roots is going virtual with a new, free workshop series to help gardeners with everything from basic spring planting to stress-relieving, garden meditations.

Each week during the duration of the coronavirus #StayHomeKC, Deep Roots will host 20-30 minute live webinars beginning at 4 p.m. (CDT) every Tuesday and Thursday. Garden experts will offer bite-size information about gardening, native plants and landscapes ranging from basic garden design principles to identification of invasive species.

The webinars are free, and participants can register once to watch the entire series. Sessions will involve some interactive, question and answer periods with videos available after each show.

Erin Goss, designer and plant procurement officer for wallflowerdesign in St. Louis, will host the first workshop, Winter Weeds and Other Spring Needs. She will discuss how to successfully open the garden season, including spring weeding, mulch, native bulbs and spring ephemerals.

Some of the upcoming sessions include:

  • Converting lawn to native plant garden: Methods of turf grass removal
  • Finding stress relief in the garden: Discussion and guided meditation
  • Helping pollinators reproduce: Understanding lifecycle and needs
  • Adding natives to existing landscaping: Natives that pair with hostas, daylilies and more
  • Planting and caring for trees and shrubs: When to plant, how to plant, how to water and mulch
  • What’s blooming now?  Live walk and talk through urban native landscaping or natural areas
