Veggie plant sale offers “car hop” service

To keep customers and employees safe from coronavirus, the Kansas City Community Garden annual veggie plant sale will offer “car hop” pickup service.

While Kansas City is under a mandated, citywide “stay at home” order, residents are allowed to go out only for “essential” services. As a source of food, KCCG is allowed to continue with its scheduled Cool Season Plant Sale from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 26 and Friday, March 27 at the gardens, 6917 Kensington Ave., Kansas City, MO.

Available plants for sale include: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale, lettuce and bundles of onions, leeks, seed potatoes and asparagus plants. Vegetable, herb and flower seeds will also be for sale.

To protect the health of customers and staff, the sale will have some significant changes:

  • To speed up the process, customers should download the Membership Form (required), Plant Order Form and Seed Order Form and fill them out before arrival.
  • All cars should approach KCCG from Gregory Street on the south and form a line.
  • Staff will serve six cars at a time in designated spaces in the parking lot. Customers will not be allowed to exit their vehicles at any time.
  • Staff will fill your order, deliver plants and seeds and provide car-side checkout.

Organizers suggest that Friday will be a better day if you want to avoid longer waiting lines. Beginning Monday, March 30, customers may purchase plants and seeds at two, walk-up windows located in the front of the building.

To ensure that everyone gets plants, KCCG will be limiting each customer to a maximum purchase of 10 three-packs and 30 packs of seeds. To protect the KCCG community, please do not attend if you or anyone in your family is sick or has been exposed to COVID-19.

KCFarmSchool at Gibbs Road is also selling transplants as are some of the farmers at the Brookside Market. Go to their websites for info. Many are now selling online for curbside pick-up at the farm or at the market.
