After the Harvest needs volunteers for its’ Amaizing Sweet Corn Glean-A-Thon to help pick 50,000 ears of corn from local farms to be donated to agencies that feed the hungry.
Corporate and volunteer teams will compete during three-hour sessions to see how much corn can be harvested during the Amaizing Sweet Corn Glean-A-Thon from July 11 – 23. The competition will culminate in winners being announced at a Sweet Corn Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 30 at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, 630 N 126th St. in Bonner Springs, KS.
Team registration is open to community groups, faith and civic organizations, local businesses and families. Register to compete at Amaizing Sweet Corn Glean-A-Thon.
“In 2022, Feeding America projects that one in six children and one in eight adults in the Kansas City area don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” said Randy Burdge, president of After the Harvest Board of Directors.
Additionally, gleaners are needed at area farms throughout the growing season, which usually ends in November. Volunteers are also needed to help pick up excess food that is being donated from farmers markets.
The non-profit organization donates fresh food to more than 560 agencies that distribute to those in need, including Harvesters. The organization typically feeds more than 35,000 people in the Kansas City area every week.
