Donate old bikes for a good cause

Do you have an old bike or two ready for a new home? It’s a good time to declutter and donate them to a worthy cause.

Local organizations need bike donations for youth and adult earn-a-bike programs, and to provide affordable bicycle transportation to those in need. Consider donating soon before peak biking weather.

Here are local non-profit organizations accepting bike donations:

BikeWalkKC

BikeWalkKC accepts gently used, unwanted bicycles to help kids across Kansas City bike to school. Since 2012, BikeWalkKC has given out over 300 bicycles to local youth. With its Earn-a-Bike program, 4th-6th grade students learn basic bike mechanics, advocacy, and safety skills. With successful completion of the program, students receive a bicycle they helped to fix.

Bikes need to be 20 inches or above, and can be dropped off Monday – Thursday from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at BikeWalkKC, 1106 E. 30 St., Ste. G, Kansas City, MO. To learn more, visit bikewalkkc.org

816 Bike Collective

816 Bike Collective is a community bicycle repair and rescue shop that opened in 2007. As a 100% volunteer operation, its mission is to keep bikes out of the landfill and to give everyone a bike who needs one. It operates as a DIY bike shop where individuals can donate their time or resources in exchange for a bike, and learn from volunteer mechanics how to repair their own bike.

Bikes can be donated during store hours, and should be in repairable condition. Donations of tools and parts are also accepted. It’s recommended to call ahead if you are unsure about the condition of a bike for donation.

Shop hours are Thursdays from 3 – 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 12 – 5 p.m. 816 Bike Collective is located at 518 E. 31st St. Kansas City, MO. To learn more, visit 816bike.org.

RevolveKC

RevolveKC works to provide reliable, affordable bicycles for transportation and recreation. It refurbishes used adult and kids’ bikes, and offers an adult Earn-a-Bike program for those in need.

Bikes in good working condition are free to donate, and bikes that need repairs cost $5 per adult bike and $2 for kids bikes. RevolveKC is open Wednesday – Saturday from 12 – 5 p.m., and is located at 5509 Troost Ave., Kansas City, MO. To learn more, visit revolvekc.org

HopeFaithKC

HopeFaithKC works to alleviate homelessness in Kansas City. Its Hope Cycles program is a bike recycling shop designed to take donated bikes, rebuild them, and provide reliable transportation to its guests. If you would like to donate bicycles or supplies, visit hopefaith.org/needed-items.

Hello,
I received this and am located in St. Louis. I wanted to mention that BWorks is local nonprofit that has several drop off locations in the metro area (including Illinois). It’s a wonderful group that refurbishes bikes and provides various programs to assist children and others with life skills and more.
