Farmer- Splitlog Farm and Blvd Loft Project
10 hrs per week
April 1 – October 31 (there is flexibility on these dates)
$22 per hour
Contract Farmer Position
KC Healthy Kids is seeking a contract farmer for Splitlog Farm. The position will assist the Local Food Program Manager/Farm Manager with all aspects of organic urban farming to help the community increase local food education and access. The position requires some food production experience, organizational skills, the ability to think strategically, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, interns, community partners and other KC Healthy Kids staff.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Support the Farm Manager in all aspects of KC Healthy Kids’ initiatives, including but not limited to Splitlog Farm growing operations and the Boulevard Lofts project.
· Provide distribution of local food to families and individuals through the farm share program on site.
· Assist with fruit and vegetable production and hydroponics at Splitlog Farm.
· Support implementation of local food events and educational opportunities as needed.
· Capture impact required for local food grants and support implementation of farm to institution programming
· Perform program administrative functions including communication to farm share participants,
· Supervise local food program interns in their implementation of program initiatives and activities as needed.
· Manage individual and group volunteer workdays.
Qualifications:
· Ability to grow, harvest, and prepare food for distribution to institutions and families.
· Excellent ability to work with racially and culturally diverse groups.
· Self-starter with the ability to work well with others.
· Ability to juggle many short- and long-term priorities and projects of varying nature.
· Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
· Ability to work outside and to perform gardening activities like bending, stooping, trimming, picking and lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally.
· Willingness to think and plan strategically, work well with a diverse range of people, and provide leadership by example to interns and volunteers.
Job Relationships:
The Contract Farmer will interact with farm share members, volunteers, interns, partners and KC Healthy Kids staff.
