Job Description

Basic Internship Description:

This internship supports the EarthWalk, which is Bridging The Gap’s (BTG) annual spring fundraising walk to raise awareness and funding for the environmental education and action programs of BTG.  Every year, hundreds of people turn out for the 3-mile non-competitive family walk, and many help raise funds by donating and asking for pledges from family and friends.

The EarthWalk will take place May 3 at the Berkley Riverfront Park near the City Market in Kansas City Missouri.  The intern must be available the day-of EarthWalk to assist the Coordinator. The intern will achieve an education in non-profit event planning and project management.  The project will include marketing, relationship building, logistics, and seeing the event through to the end result and wrap-up phase.

Major Responsibilities/Learning Objectives:

Assist the EarthWalk Coordinator in the early planning and promotion of the 2014 EarthWalk including:

  • Work with the EarthWalk Coordinator to create a marketing and outreach plan, including the creation of a social media schedule with copy for Twitter and Facebook postings.
  • Assist in preparation of event logistics and implementation of event.
  • Distribute EarthWalk brochures and posters to area businesses.
  • Finalize 2014 EarthWalk participant data entry into database.
  • Solicit in-kind donations for brochure & poster printing, T-shirts, food, etc.
  • Assist the EarthWalk Coordinator in securing 3 top prizes for overall fundraisers, identifying 3 prize incentive levels and additional prize donations for giveaways.
  • List EarthWalk 2014 event date & description on online calendars.
  • Update list of area walks/runs between February and EarthWalk where we can distribute flyers. Contact runs/walks for permission. Schedule volunteers if needed. Print flyers for each walk/run.
  • Create team recruitment materials and plan.
  • Assist with planning and logistics of entertainment along walk route.
  • Other duties as necessary.

Effect of Work on Program:

The EarthWalk is one of Bridging The Gap’s largest funding sources for general operations and often the gateway into a person’s involvement with BTG. The work accomplished through this internship will help the event grow awareness of, funding for and participation in BTG’s programs.

Skills/Experience Needed:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to relate well with diverse groups of people and represent oneself and BTG in a professional manner.
  • Organized, detail-oriented self-starter; able to manage time effectively and work without direct supervision.
  • Experience or education/training in event planning, marketing and fundraising/development preferred, but not required.

Time Commitment:  5 hours per week split between Tuesday and/or Thursday.  Intern will need to be available during the day to make phone calls, attend meetings, etc.

Equipment Needed (include all needs including phone, computer, etc.): Computer & phone at the office, BTG email account (earthwalk@bridgingthegap.org)

Availability for Work to Be Done From Home: Yes. There may be times to occasionally complete duties from home.

Any Additional Information: Volunteer interns will be asked to sign an Intellectual Property Release form for all work completed during this internship.
