Temporary Field Supervisor

Society of St. AndrewKansas City, Missouri, United States

NOTE: This job listing has expired and may no longer be relevant!

Job Description

The Society of St. Andrew is looking for 30 volunteers to help supervise gleanings one day per month from June through November.

With the harvest season comes one of our greatest opportunities to feed the hungry in our community.  Often we are called to glean at more than one farm on a particular day. We also could glean morning, noon, and evening at local orchards and still not get all the fruit available.  I need people who can lead gleans occasionally at the farms and orchards surrounding Kansas City.

What exactly does a Field Supervisor do? You meet the farmer 20 minutes before the gleaning begins, and get whatever instructions he has for us, and thank him for allowing us to be there. Our farmers are the nicest people, they are so generous, and just fabulous to be around, and they sometimes glean right beside us.

As the volunteers arrive, you have them sign in and collect their liability waiver.  You’ll have a list of whom to expect on the gleaning report which I will e-mail to you. When the volunteers have arrived, you tell them why we’re there, the instructions you received from the farmer, and a few safety and hygiene rules (all written out for you.)

You supervise the collection and packaging of the produce and make sure they stay in the field or row the farmer said we could glean.  Make sure they drink water and rest as necessary. You laugh and talk and have a good time. After the food is collected (or during the process) you weigh it, record the pounds and where it’s going, and then distribute it to the volunteers’ vehicles for transport to food pantries.  You will have a list of all the local pantries and their hours of operation and addresses.  If volunteers have a new pantry that we don’t have on our list, write down the information and we’ll add it to our data base.  If you have any questions during the glean, you can always call me. I will train you at a gleaning that I lead.

Last year we missed out on many opportunities, but my hope is that we will have enough Field Supervisors in place for 2014 to handle every glean that comes our way.  So if you are willing to become a Field Supervisor, and help us out once a month or however often you’d like, please give me a call, 816-921-0856. My goal is to have someone “on call” for every day of the month, which is why I’m looking for 30 people.
