Job Description

This internship supports Keep Kansas City Beautiful (KKCB), a program affiliate of Bridging The Gap (BTG). KKCB works with citizens, businesses, and government to create a cleaner and more beautiful Kansas City. Through collaborative efforts, KKCB works to reduce solid waste, prevent and cleanup litter, and conduct sustainable beautification projects.

This intern will work with the KKCB program manager on two key programs, Green and Litter Free Events and the Great American Cleanup. For each project, the intern will assist in promoting the programs, coordinating the requests, communicating with appropriate staff, and collecting results.

The Green Events program promotes waste reduction and recycling at community events and educates event coordinators to organize more sustainable events. Groups rent KKCB’s portable recycling containers for a nominal fee and capture as much recyclables as possible, diverting these materials from the landfill.

KKCB supports neighborhoods and organizations to host events in concert with the Great American Cleanup. KKCB offers free resources that are essential tools in a successful cleanup – a tool lending shed, trash bags, and gloves.

Major Responsibilities/Learning Objectives:

  • Promote both programs to past and potential event coordinators throughout the area.
  • Coordinate the programs: educate event coordinators; facilitate the recycling bin rental process/tool lending shed process and supply inventory; collect payment; monitor program database; collect and analyze results to evaluate program(s) success.
  • Work with KKCB/BTG staff to streamline online forms for bin rentals/tool lending shed and process evaluation.
  • Research funding and facilities to expand program(s) operation throughout the metro.

Effect of Work on Program:

The KKCB intern will be the primary contact and coordinator for Green Events and the Great America Cleanup in 2014. Each of these projects are well-established in the community.  Neighborhoods and organizations return annually to participate in the programs. This internship will have a significant effect on the success and growth of the programs, and will enable KKCB to increase litter abatement and increase event recycling in the Kansas City area.

Skills/Experience Needed:

  • Strong interest in being an active part of the solution to environmental issues, particularly recycling and litter abatement.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to relate well to diverse groups of people.
  • Experience with spreadsheets and database management preferred.
  • Organized, detail-oriented self-starter; able to manage time effectively, handle multiple projects in different stages, and work without direct supervision.

Time Commitment:

Flexible days per week.  10 – 20 hrs/wk. The hours of the internship will vary based on program(s) activity.

Equipment Needed:

A cell phone and a home windows-based computer will provide flexibility and make the working experience easier and more efficient. The intern may also be asked to make site visits to the recycling centers where the materials are located, so transportation would be preferred (mileage would be paid).

Availability for Work to Be Done From Home:

If the intern has a home windows-based computer and internet connection, some work may be done from home.
