Part-Time Zero Waste Associate – Overland Park

Job Description

Support the college’s zero waste goals where diversion of materials from reaching the landfill is at or beyond 90%. In order to achieve this goal this position will perform manual and mental work necessary to support the recycling, compost, and other waste diversion programs. In addition to these functions this position will also assist in maintaining the Center’s facilities assets, and train and support student interns. The position requires a hardworking, detail-orientated, organized, and enthusiastic individual.

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Main duty – Perform college’s daily scheduled recycling, and compost pick-ups from material hubs and distribute to proper locations. Manage surplus items for reuse and donation pickup and drop-off. Prepare items for vendors and coordinate pickups. Performance is acceptable when: Materials are handled in a safe and efficient manner that benefits the college’s zero waste goals. Monitoring of trailers, dumpsters, roll-offs, and college grounds to manage vendor pickups and public dumping issues. Interactions with campus community and vendors are positive and meaningful.
  • Main duty – Assist in training interns in their outlined duties and the operation of equipment and safety procedures, serve as a lead to Sustainability Interns and as a liaison between other college departments. Performance is acceptable when: Interns properly understand process and procedures outlined by supervisor. Interns feel respected, encouraged, and lead by example, interactions are positive. Interns are taught and reminded to work in a safe manner. Issues are clearly communicated to all staff.
  • Main duty – Maintain clean, organized and safe operations Performance is acceptable when: Work areas are reviewed on a periodic basis for clean, organized, and safe operation. Work areas are maintained in a clean, organized, and safe fashion. Public recycling systems and departmental programs are maintained with current signage and bin standards. Issues are clearly communicated that arise from a lack of clean, orderly and safe operations.
  • Main duty – Operate and maintain college’s recycling and composting equipment. Performance is acceptable when: Equipment is periodically inspected and maintained on a scheduled basis. Equipment is operating safely and issues are communicated effectively to all staff.
