Schedule and remote work: The community based nature of this position will require significant weekend and evening time to attend community meetings and events, and to meet residents where they are and when they are available.
The Community Organizer position plays a key role in a new five-year partnership between BikeWalkKC, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Children’s Mercy Hospital. The project will address health disparities in chronic disease by increasing physical activity, improving access to nutritious foods, and increasing participation in healthy family weight programs. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention is the primary funder. BikeWalkKC’s role is to lead efforts to expand plans, policies, and projects that support accessible and equitable physical activity and active transportation options. Our work will prioritize residents in Kansas City, Missouri’s East Side and Historic Northeast where life expectancy is as much as 16 years lower than the rest of the city.
The Community Organizer will also support the work of the Transportation for All Coalition, a 2024 project to convene social service agencies and nonprofits that serve individuals experiencing transportation insecurity. In addition, the person in this position will participate in the general day-to-day work of BikeWalkKC’s Public Policy program, such as assisting with the annual policy agenda, researching emerging topics, etc. Finally, the position may occasionally support the community engagement and outreach efforts of BikeWalkKC’s Community Planning program.
