Celebrate all things compost at Compost Fest

Join the Kansas City composting community for Compost Fest, a celebration of healthy soils and reducing food waste headed to the landfill.

Hosted by Missouri Organic Recycling at KC Farm School, the family-friendly event will feature composting demonstrations, live music, local composting resources, KC Farm School’s plant sale, and Goats on the Go.

It will be held Saturday, May 11 from 9 am to 2 pm at KC Farm School, 2443 S. 42nd St., Kansas City, KS.

Events include:

  • Missouri Organic Recycling will have a live demonstration of a compost pile with leaves, wood chips, hay, food waste, and beer dregs from Boulevard Brewing Co.
  • Kids Corner featuring fun, educational activities
  • Demonstrations of composting methods including a Johnson-Su bioreactor, a biochar burn, and black soldier fly larvae composting
  • KC Farm School’s plant sale and vendor market
  • Goats on the Go working on the farm
  • No-till planting demonstration

The local composting community will also be there to share resources including Compost Collective KC, Urbavore Farm, KC Can Compost, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, Community Soil Science Cooperative, Pachamama Alliance, Unified Government of Wyandotte County, and the City of Kansas City, MO.

Missouri Organic is also giving away free woodchips allowing you to bring your own container to take home some with you.

Composting is one of the ways we can keep food scraps out of landfills, helping reduce landfill methane emissions. Composting can also help the climate by restoring soil health, which helps build resilience to climate-related changes, reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers, and sequester carbon.
