Learn about environmental journalism

High school students and recent graduates can learn about reporting on climate change at the Institute for Environmental Journalism this summer.

Students will work with award-winning journalists who research and write about climate change, environmental justice and clean energy. The institute is sponsored by InsideClimate News, a Pulitzer Prize award winning publication.

These two intensive programs are scheduled for July 1-12 at the College of the Atlantic at the base of Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, ME and July 15-26 in Brooklyn, NY.

Students will learn how to research and write an original story, develop sources, and learn about the scientific process, climate science, clean energy technology and media literacy. The Maine session will be held at the College of the Atlantic, the world’s first carbon-neutral college which was named the greenest college in America in 2017 by The Princeton Review and the Sierra Club. The New York session includes field trips to an environmental Superfund site and scientific lab.

“The Institute is one piece of InsideClimate News’ mission to revive and embolden environmental journalism across the United States,” said Beth Daley, director of the Institute for Environmental Journalism and ICN’s Director of Strategic Development. “Students today will be the journalists of tomorrow, and we want to teach them to witness, question and communicate some of the world’s most profound challenges. Even if they do not become journalists, we know the Institute will provide a solid foundation for them to be vibrant participants in our democracy.”
