Is your Kansas City neighborhood working on a community garden, recycling projects, energy efficiency, repurposing vacant lots or other Earth-friendly projects?

The city of Kansas City, MO is calling for nominations for its KC Green Neighborhood Recognition Program. As part of the city’s KC Green initiative, this program recognizes neighborhoods that have implemented sustainable practices.

Registered neighborhoods can apply online at KCMOthrough July 31. The city will award neighborhoods with a platinum, gold or silver designation based on the green/sustainable initiatives they have implemented. Winners will be announced in the fall.

The purpose of the KC Green Neighborhood Recognition Program is to recognize those neighborhoods that have implemented sustainable practices within their community. Past winners have worked to reduce waste, air pollution, stormwater runoff, energy costs and transportation costs. Other neighborhoods have worked to provide local residents with greater access to local foods through community gardens and orchards.

Neighborhoods selected for recognition will receive neighborhood signage, acknowledgment in city publications, and access to workshops on rain barrels, home energy efficiency, trees and rain gardens. Neighborhoods will also receive an eco-gift of rain barrels, recycle bins, electric lawn mower or garden tools to help continue their progress.
“It is important to recognize the neighborhoods in this community going above and beyond to incorporate sustainability into their everyday lives,” said Dennis Murphey, KCMO chief environmental officer.

Neighborhoods can find more information at the KC Green Neighborhood Recognition Program.
