Students plan nationwide climate rallies

Students around the country will continue calling for government action on climate change at rallies on Friday, December 6. To find a rally near you, go to Sunrise Movement.

Students are supporting 15 year-old Greta Thunberg who last year sat in front of the Swedish Parliament every school day for three weeks to protest the lack of action on the climate crisis. Her question was: “What’s the point in learning if there won’t be a future to use that knowledge?” Since then, students around the world have joined her in walking out of class to demand worldwide, government action on climate change.

In Kansas City, students are planning to walk out of class in support of the Green New Deal, a proposal in Congress to transition the economy to 100-percent renewable energy in 10 years. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas and Councilman Erick Bunch are scheduled to attend a rally that will begin at noon on the south steps of Kansas City Hall, 414 E. 12th St., Kansas City, MO. Another rally is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Johnson County Community College Student Center Courtyard, 12345 College Blvd., Overland Park, KS.

In Lawrence, KS, students are planning a rally at noon at City Hall, 6 E. 6th St. and at 5:30 pm. at Community Building Gym, 115 W. 11th St.
