Sustainable Success Stories Call for Projects 2012

Sustainable Success Stories is part of an ongoing community dialogue focused on building a better understanding of sustainable practices that have the potential to transform our community into “America’s Green Region.”

In recent years, the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) has called for sustainable success stories to recognize examples of great work going on throughout the region. The 2012 Call for Projects asks local organizations to submit projects that help create sustainable places in the Greater Kansas City region. MARC’s Creating Sustainable Places initiative identifies sustainable places as vibrant, connected and green places that have the following seven characteristics:

  • Reinvestment
  • Transportation choices
  • Housing choices
  • Development in corridors and activity centers
  • Design for healthier lifestyles
  • Preservation of unique community characteristics
  • Resource conservation and energy efficiency

This call for projects seeks to recognize work throughout the region that is contributing to sustainable development and exemplifies one or more of these seven characteristics. Projects must be submitted by 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14.

By sharing local successes and challenges, MARC hopes to enable community partners to learn about and replicate locally tailored, high-impact sustainability practices. MARC and its partners will select outstanding projects for presentation at a Sustainable Success Stories workshop on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012.

Creating Sustainable Places Photo Contest

MARC is also launching a photo contest in conjunction with this year’s Sustainable Success Stories event. Starting in September, photo contests will be held to find examples that illustrate sustainable places within the Kansas City region.

Submissions will be collected on MindMixer, a digital engagement forum, and users will be able to vote on the winners. Winning photos will be on display at the Sustainable Success Stories event on Nov. 30. For more information on the contest, to submit photos or join the conversation, visit
