Community Groceries now open on Troost

The new grocery store offers fresh produce, local vendors, pantry staples, and made-to-order sandwiches in Midtown Kansas City

The doors of the local, black-owned Community Groceries grocery store officially opened in Midtown in December 2023 providing much-need groceries to the neighborhood.

Located at 3501 Troost Ave. in Kansas City, the grocery store offers fresh produce, pantry staples, organic options, local vendors, kombucha on tap, and other items commonly found at grocery stores.

It was started by Kortney Lee, who recently shared his vision for founding the store on social media.

“I started this initiative because I saw a need in our community – a need for accessible, affordable, and more nutritious food options. I understand the challenges many of us face when it comes to putting healthy meals on the table, and I wanted to do something about it,” said Lee.

“Community Groceries isn’t just a grocery store. It’s about addressing food inequality. It’s about giving you the power to make choices for yourselves and your family without breaking the bank. … But it’s not just about providing groceries, it’s about building a stronger healthier, and more connected community. I believe that healthy communities start with access to healthy food,” said Lee.

The grocery store sources from over 40 local vendors and farmers including Gigi the Vegan, Fair Share Farm, Teabiotics Kombucha, Parkville Coffee, Neighbor Leaf Tea Co,. and Shatto Milk Company.

Sustainability is also a key part of its operations. The store features its own line of pantry staples for items like granola, nuts, and dried fruits to reduce waste and offer wholesale prices. It is also working to minimize waste and promote reusable packaging, according to its website.

Community Groceries is currently open Monday – Friday from 9 am – 9 pm, and Saturdays from 9 am – 8 pm at 3501 Troost Ave., Kansas City, MO.
