See if you qualify for a new Evergy program that offers a free home energy assessment, some easy energy upgrades and upfront payment for new energy-efficient equipment that can reduce energy bills.
Evergy launched the Pay As You Save (PAYS) program this fall as a one-year pilot program for its Missouri customers. It will help individual homeowners afford energy-efficiency upgrades that save money and make homes more comfortable, while helping Kansas City reach its overall carbon reduction goals.
“The net result of participating in the PAYS program is that your bill should be lower than it would have been prior to participating,” said April McNabb, Evergy program manager. “We only install energy-efficiency upgrades after determining whether these upgrades would save more over time than they cost to install. In short, you pay back the upgrades, while still saving money.”
Here’s how it works:
- Missouri homeowners can request a free, no-obligation, home-energy assessment. If your home is eligible for energy-efficiency upgrades through PAYS, you get a customized plan outlining improvements available to you that could include insulation, duct sealing or a new HVAC system.
- Free upgrades are automatically included, like low-flow shower heads, faucet aerators, water heater insulation wraps, standard LED light bulbs and smart power strips.
- PAYS will pay the upfront cost of an HVAC upgrade, attic insulation, air sealing, duct sealing and smart thermostats. For these energy upgrades, you can choose the work you want completed and the contractor from your home assessment and an authorized contractor list. Then schedule your work.
- After the upgrades are complete, Evergy pays the contractor directly.
- Evergy adds a fixed monthly amount to your bill until the upgrades are paid off. The amount is calculated to be less than your total monthly savings, so your bill is still lower than previous electric bills.
- Evergy considers this an investment in home energy efficiency, not a loan. So the program has no credit requirements. If you move, the amount due is tied to the home meter and continues with the energy bill of the house.
According to Evergy, more than 270,000 Missouri residents participate in Evergy energy-efficiency programs. More than 74,000 homes have been powered with energy saved and more than 2,200 businesses have been impacted. In total, 900,000,000 kWh of electricity has been saved since 2013.
