From food to drinks, Heirloom immerses customers in a uniquely Kansas City experience and serves coffee from local businesses, including Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters.
Like the name Heirloom suggests, Heirloom Bakery is rooted in a family legacy of baking and passing down recipes. When Scott met Kate Stueve in Washington, D.C. while studying art history at American University, they let their shared background in baking and art flourish into ideas for their own bakery. Kate also studied art at Drake University and later moved to Washington D.C. to work on her masters in art therapy at George Washington University. Scott worked at a bakery in Washington D.C. for 10 years and the experiences learned there eventually came in handy at Heirloom. Many of both Scott and Kate’s family recipes made it into the Heirloom menus — like Scott’s mother’s rhubarb pie and Kate’s family’s Chocolate pecan pie, pumpkin muffins and banana nut muffins.
“We like to have fun with things we grew up eating, like the oatmeal cream pie and homemade pop tarts,” said Kate.
Along with new recipes, the Meinke’s use family recipes they grew up with as kids, or things they enjoyed as kids and use that nostalgia factor to turn the recipe into something new and fresh.
