The Johnson County Parks and Recreation District (JCPRD) just unveiled new iconic artwork featuring four local parks as part of its public art Poster Project.
The Poster Project showcases the picturesque landscapes of Johnson County parks and facilities through the popular style reminiscent of 1930s Work Progress Administration (WPA) Posters.
With an intentional focus on local Kansas City talent, the initiative aims to cultivate a deeper connection between art and nature.
Artists Ruthie Osa, Sol Anzorena, Julia Morris, and Haley Chaffin were chosen to craft the 2024 artwork featuring Antioch Park, Ernie Miller Park, Millcreek Streamway Park, and Stilwell Community Park.
The artwork is on display at the the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center and is available to purchase as posters, stickers, postcards, and canvases. The proceeds benefit the JCPRD Public Art Program.
The project features the following artists and parks:
Haley Chaffin: Antioch Park
Haley Chaffin brings Antioch Park to life by featuring its popular stepping stones and bald cypress trees.
Sol Anzorena: Ernie Miller Park
Sol Anzorena celebrates the tree canopy and night sky at Ernie Miller Park in her poster featuring an owl in the full moon.
Ruthie Osa: Mill Creek Streamway Park
Ruthie Osa’s poster for Mill Creek Streamway Park highlights bluebird houses at the park and the miles of recreational trails that the park is known for.
Julia Morris: Stilwell Community Park
Julia Morris’ poster for Stilwell Community Park showcases Kansas’ big blue skies alongside vibrant prairies and pollinators.
The JCPRD Poster Project first launched in 2023 featuring Shawnee Mission Park, Cedar Niles Park, Lexington Lake Park, and Big Bull Creek Park.
All of the designs can also be purchased alongside the entire Kansas Parks and Greenspaces collection.
