The world’s largest Passive House Institute certified project opens in August with 282 luxury apartments that will operate on 92-percent less energy than comparable buildings.
Second + Delaware apartments in the Kansas City’s River Market area were designed to be highly energy efficient for low-cost heating and cooling. The triple-glazed windows and 16-inch walls help the units maintain a consistent, year-round interior temperature and high air quality required for the Passive House Institute certification.
The complex offers many sustainable features, including a 285 kWh solar system that produces 381,000 kWh of electricity annually from 760 solar panels that cover 14,060 square feet. An open rooftop features raised garden beds for residents who want to garden, while enjoying unobstructed views of the Missouri River and the downtown skyline.
The buildings wrap around a park-like courtyard that includes seating and picnic areas, a dog park and saltwater pool. Amenities include a yoga studio, free fitness classes and teaching kitchen. All parking is underground and includes electric car charging stations and indoor bicycle parking. The center is located two blocks from the KC Streetcar and an easy walk to the River Market and downtown.
