Save on Energy Star appliances during Earth Week

If you’re in the market to purchase a new Energy Star® appliance, take advantage of the Missouri Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday and pay no sales tax from April 19-25 on qualifying purchases.

Many cities and counties across the state have opted into the tax-free exemption on purchases up to $1,500 per appliance during the seven-day period.

Locally, the participating cities include Belton, Gladstone, Kansas City, Lee’s Summit, Liberty, Platte City and Raymore, and participating counties include Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte. For a complete list of participating cities and counties, visit the Missouri Department of Revenue.

Since 2009, the sales tax holiday has been scheduled each year to promote energy efficiency during the week of Earth Day, April 22.

Energy Star® appliances that qualify include:

  • Air conditioners
  • Clothes dryers
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Freezers
  • Furnaces
  • Heat pumps
  • Refrigerators
  • Water heaters

In order to qualify, the appliance must have an Energy Star® rating. According to the Energy Star® website, trash compactors, conventional ovens, ranges and stoves do not receive an energy rating. So, tax will continue to apply to purchases of non-qualifying items.
