Save on appliances with Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday

If you’ve been wanting to upgrade to new Energy Star® appliances, on April 19-25 you can take advantage of the Missouri Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday exempting state sales tax on retail sales of qualifying purchases.

Many cities and counties across the state also have opted into the tax-free exemption on purchases up to $1,500 per appliance during the seven-day period.

Locally, the participating cities include Belton, Gladstone, Kansas City, Lee’s Summit, Liberty, Platte City and Raymore, and participating counties include Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte.

Since 2009, the sales tax holiday has been scheduled each year to promote energy efficiency during the week of Earth Day, April 22.

Energy Star® appliances that qualify include:

  • Air conditioners
  • Clothes dryers
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Freezers
  • Furnaces
  • Heat pumps
  • Refrigerators
  • Water heaters

In order to qualify, the appliance must have an Energy Star® rating. According to the Energy Star® website, trash compactors, conventional ovens, ranges and stoves do not receive an energy rating. So, tax will continue to apply to purchases of these items.

For more information about qualified appliances and participating cities and counties, visit the Missouri Department of Revenue.
