The Kansas City metro area offers a variety of family-friendly events and fireworks displays to start your holiday weekend off with a bang.

Red, Wild and Blue!

July 3, 10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center, 4750 Troost Ave., Kansas City, MO

Begin Independence Day weekend at the Discovery Center. This free, all-ages event celebrates nature with live animals such as the red milksnake and the red-eared slider turtle. Explore Sycamore Station’s all-natural play area and make solar sun prints using natural objects and blue print paper. Find more nature-based events and classes at www.mdc.mo.gov.

Kansas City’s botanical garden comes alive in a vibrant festival of daylilies, live music and fireworks on July 3. Experience the Perennial Garden featuring 500 varieties of daylilies, and see the Heartland Harvest Garden, one of the nation’s largest edible landscapes with more than 2,000 species of edible plants. Daylilies will be available for purchase throughout the event, and the Heartland Harvest Garden’s Tasting Station is open from 3 – 7 p.m. Kids can make a splash while touring the Fountain Garden, and release their creativity for Paint-A-Pot ($4), and face painting ($3 or $5) from 2 – 8 p.m.

There will be live music from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Musical performances include Sarah Haskins Vocal Studio from Blue Springs, MO at 11 a.m., KC Variety Band Trio at 4:30 p.m., and Lee’s Summit Symphony at 7:30 p.m. The fireworks display begins at 9:30 p.m.

KC Riverfest

July 4, 4 – 11 p.m.

Celebrate with music, kids activities, food and the biggest fireworks show in the Midwest. Admission is free from 4 – 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., tickets are $5 (cash only), and free for children 12 and under. For more information, visit www.kcriverfest.com.

Jackson County Fourth of July Celebration

Longview Lake Beach, 11101 Raytown Rd., Kansas City, MO

July 4, 5:30 – 11 p.m.,

Enjoy great food and music, a military tribute, kids carnival, and fireworks starting at 9:30 p.m. Admission is free. Visit www.jacksongov.org.

Cities of Fairway, Westwood, Roeland Park, Mission Woods and Westwood Hills

July 2, fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m.
